Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Maryland

Rights of joint tenants

My partners and I just broke up and we own a house in joing tenancy. One of us wishes to stay in the house and to buy the other out. What if we can't agree on a price? Can one of us force the house to be sold on the market?

In short the answer is yes. It is referred to as an ouster. If it gets to the point where a price can't be decided on, however, I would recommend trying to mediate an agreement. Its a less expensive and less destructive method of resolving a potential problem versus a court ordered sale.
