In Maryland, can police run your tag for no reason?

In the state of Maryland, can a police officer run your tag at a red light if you are doing nothing wrong?

Yes. Due to the minimally intrusive nature of running your tag through the MVA system, the police can do so at any time and for any reason. Even if they have a pretextual reason for wanting to stop your car, this type of traffic stop would still be valid.

If your tags are suspended, or if a person matching the description of the person driving the car has a suspended license, you can be pulled over and that is not necessarily an invalid stop. And, of course, when the cops find your two hundred pounds of marihuana in the trunk, get a lawyer right away to explore other options to suppress the evidence.
