Can I cash checks written to me from insurance policies where I am the beneficiary after my mother's death or are they apart of the estate?

If the life insurance has a named beneficiary then yes, the beneficiary can (and should) have insurance proceeds made payable directly to them.

The only time life insurance proceeds typically get paid to the estate is when there is no named living beneficiary.
