Legal Question in Business Law in Massachusetts

Employee rights

I work for an orthodontist, and I was

hired for full time work. My question is

can my employer cut my hours down

without asking me? Also, they claim

that ''times are tight'', but they have

an ad for ortho assistant on craigs list,

and give extra hours to an assistant

that has been there for two months,

and denied me the extra hours when I

asked, and I have been there for over

a year, and have had no complaints

from my employer about my

performance that would give them a

reason to deny me the extra work.

They also have been secretive and

blatantly dishonest about this-do I

have any say, or am I at their mercy?

Re: Employee rights

Your last question phrases it right -- absent an employment contract (which you don't mention) or some policies in an "employee manual" that could create some rights, you can be terminated for any reason or no reason at any time. IMO, there is a better-than-even chance that the employer is looking for your replacement in the advertisement, and intends to terminate you, so you should start looking for other work right away.

Best wishes,
