Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Massachusetts

I found that there was a collection account on my credit report showing that I owe my apartment communities about $5500 - this collection account started Sept, 2013, less than one month after I moved it. In other words, it has been in my account for 8 months!

The apartment communities have acknowledged that they misplaced my social security number to another person who owes them money.

Do I have a legal case here? Should I hire a lawyer? They have agreed to pay me compensation, but how much should I ask for?

I saw this question on another site but didn't have time to answer.

Do you have a case? Yes, it would mainly be under the FCRA, but we could perhaps pursue additional causes for you after reviewing the specific facts and evidence.

Should you hire a lawyer? Yes, but they should attempt attempt settlement for you first on a contingency basis and only charge a fee from the settlement or if you wish to pursue the matter in Court should they refuse settlement.

After I review the specific evidence of your case, we can come to a reasonable figure to Demand in settlement sufficient to cover your damages and attorneys fees award-able under the FCRA.

Please feel free to contact my office for a no obligation assessment of your case and a proposal on moving forward.
