dear sir

my gas was not shut off when i moved out of a residence the next resident never put the gas in her name so it stayed on under mine without my knowledge and now i have a $4,000 gas bill that a did not use what can i do

If you notified the gas company in advance of your move, and have some reasonable evidence of same, it is the gas company's problem. If you assumed that they did not need notice, you have a problem, as the contract remained open and in your name. If you know the name of the gas-using next tenant, however, you can seek to have HER pay for the gas, as the law and equity consider that she received a benefit.
