Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Massachusetts

Stolen property after failed attempts to try and retrieve property

I was staying with a friend for a period of 2-3 weeks(2-3 days out of the week for convenience purposes, rent free because it was easier for me to get to work, I didn't have a key or anything, I didn't keep my clothes there).Things didn't work out because she kept giving her boyfriend the keys to go in and out of the house, and tensions buuilt becauseI didn't feel safe or that my things were secured (I entrusted her to watch a few large items that were there, she said she had them insured if anything happened). i left and and said I would return with a truck for my large items, it was never a good time for me to get my things, meanwhile she was using my things, and I went to the police and the police said I would have to work it out because it is not as if my things are stolen. I wanted them to help me get it and they basically acted as if there are more important things they had to do and I would have to make an appointment, even though I had all receipts proving it was my property. She then asked me if I wanted to sell my things to her, I said no, few days later she calls and tells me one of my large expensive pieces of property had been stolen, but she was going to have it replaced through insurance, she never did. Small claims?

You can try small claims. You can also claim it stolen, under these facts. However, the police do in fact have a lot on their plate these days, and you may need to seek a charge through the clerk-magistrate's office.
