Legal Question in Immigration Law in Massachusetts

Green Card and study abroad required by US university.

I am taking a degree at a large American university that requires me to spend two years overseas as part of the degree program. If I return home to visit my family, do I still need a re-entry permit? I will be paying US tuition and will graduate in the US. I have never been to the country where I will be studying and have no ties to that country.

If you are a U.S. Legal Permanent Resident, & will be outside the U.S. for more than 6 months, you will absolutely need a re-entry permit, regardless of the reason you are leaving.
