Legal Question in Employment Law in Massachusetts

As of 2012 for Mass labor laws. Should I give a 2 week notice on a certificed letter that July 5, 2012 is my last day to work. If the company lets me go on the day I give my notice are they required to pay me for the 2 weeks? Thank you so much!

If you are an at-will employee, which you probably are, the employer can terminate you immediately, as it can terminate you at any time for any or no reason, with limited exceptions. That being said, it is professional for an employee to give notice and, typically, employers will keep you on or, if it decides to terminate you, will pay you the balance anyway. However, unless it contractually agreed otherwise, it may terminate you immediately and has no obligation to pay you for the two weeks. My advice is to save the postage, provide verbal notice and follow-up with a confirmatory email.
