Can friends bad telling lies about me to an ex girlfriend be sued for slander

In the process of trying to work things out with an ex-girlfriend, some people who I use to be friends with started telling her lies about me. This caused her to have a change of heart about us getting back together, causing several months of deep depresion. Does this sound like a case worth trying in court. Money isn't an issue. Its my reputation with my ex that I want to save.

You may have an action for defamation. But why throw more money at this situation.
