I have been certified as personal representative for my father's estate. Do I need a separate tax ID number or can I use my social security number to open an estate account at the bank?

You need to get an FEIN for the estate and open an account in the name of the estate.

Hi -

I'm sorry for your loss. You will need to obtain a separate Tax ID Number for the estate. You can get this number yourself by going to the IRS.gov website and clicking on "Apply for an Employer ID number." You will need the ID # before opening the bank account. If you have trouble with the IRS site, some bank officers will help you get the TIN when you open the account. Good luck -
