Whereas it is not required, it isn't prohibited, either. If a landlord requests this sort information on an application, he is doing so in an attempt to protect himself against a default and asks for this information to that end. I suppose you could negotiate with a prosepective landlord that that information is irrelevant to you leasing an apartment from him, but I don't imagine you'll have much luck in renting apartments from them.
