The question is very open-ended and requires a lot of information so my answer will not do it justice. Do you owe the debt? Are you planning to contest the amount, interest, etc? If you have a lot of debt you might consider bankruptcy or at least a consultation with a lawyer. You must file an answer within 21 days. Do not call the other side and think you will get anywhere. It won't matter what they say, you must respond in writing within 21 days of the lawsuit being handed to you. You might be able to work out a payment arrangement as well but again, what they say will not matter, you must file an answer if you want to keep your right to contest the alleged debt. Have any debt collectors previously contacted you regarding this debt? If so did they call your friends or relatives? There are ways to turn the tables on creditors if they have violated the law. Did I mention that you must file an answer to the lawsuit within 21 days of the date it was handed to you?
