As a general rule, character witnesses aren't needed or very relevant in a criminal case. They can be, but it's not the norm. What can help is factual witnesses or have direct information or knowledge about his case that can help him or hurt the prosecutor's case.

The best thing you can do for your brother is to make sure he is represented by an attorney that has vast experience in criminal defense and makes it a primary focus of his or her practice. What you don't want is a dabbler or general practitioner because criminal law is far too complex and serious for that. One that is familiar the particular court he will be appearing in is even better. Google is a great way to look for an attorney.

Feel free to contact my office. I will gladly speak with you about your brother's case. If I'm not able to help I may be able to make a good referral. Good luck.
