Legal Question in Criminal Law in Michigan

can a defense attorney hold evidence in the case and then bring it up while the witness is on the stand to stick it to them or do they have to tell the prosecutor what they have? Can they use text messages against me if needed although they would have nothing to do with the case but the criminal would want to get back at me. He was our roommate and while he stayed here we slept together a hand full of times. all the while he was slowly robbing us of our things. My ring, my daughters rings, our gun, and money. He has admitted to it all through the phone while in jail so its all on type. But I am afraid he will try to bring this up for some reason and I have yet to tell the detective any thing at all. Should I'm tell them and will he tell my boyfriend if I do or is it confidential
