Legal Question in Criminal Law in Michigan

Local Police Policy

I live in Michigan and when my car was broken into the police never even came, they had me come to the dept. and file a report. I asked if they were going to fingerprint the vehicle or even the brick that had been used to smash the window they said no. They explained by saying ''they will only fingerprint the vehicle if there is a suspect in custudy.'' Is the S.O. P in Mich or just in my city. If so how do they ever catch these crooks.

Re: Local Police Policy

That sounds like a local departmental practice.

It makes little sense to allow you to use the car before they check it for prints because your very use of the car will likely obliterate the perp's prints (smudging them, covering them over with your own prints, etc.).

Mr. Neil O'Brien has rightly answered your query. One cannot say anything against pigheadedness.
