Legal Question in Family Law in Michigan

How old does a child have to be

My boyfriend has a son, and is recently divorced from his wife, the son does not want to see his mother at all and he is 13, going to be 14 in January. Right now the court is having him see a counselor. How old does he have to be before they can quit making him see his mother.

Re: How old does a child have to be

Thanks for writing. The child must be 18 before he has 100% control. Before that age, the family court judge has 100% control of the situation. The court may take the child's desires into account in varying degrees depending on the case. Thanks, atty. Trichler
