defense fee compensation

In a civil case where the plaintiff admits in deposition to the case being frivolous, can the defendent counter to have the plaintiff pay his legal fees?

In Michigan, we have a court rule that allows the trial court to make a finding that a case or defense is frivolous and then award sanctions that include attorneys fees. William S. Stern
