Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Michigan

Our son signed an agreement to pay back $4500.00 after he graduated. He has been estranged for the past 5 months and don't expect payment. Is he legally bound to pay it back.

Yes, it is a legal contract. But what does that mean to you? Are you going to file a lawsuit against your son? How do you think you collect after obtaining a judgment? You have a sheriff go in and take his stuff. If you are up to that, go for it. However, if the long-term damage to the potential resurrection of your potential relationship is not worth $4,500.00 (which you probably would not collect on anyway), just write it off as a learning experience.
