Legal Question in Legal Ethics in Michigan

Pro Bono program ethics, opposing party Pro Se

Is it unethical to provide professional services for a Pro Bono applicant that is requesting professional counsel against a party who is without counsel (Pro Se). I know presumption with any Pro Bono program is that opposing party has counsel (usually reason Pro Bono applicant is seeking help), but if opposing side does not have counsel, is there any law or presidence relative to this question? Thank you. Mike

No, it's not unethical. A lawyer can represent whoever he or she wants to represent. Once undertaking the representation, that lawyer has to do a good job. It is not the lawyer's duty to look out for the opposition, no matter how poor or ignorant. William S. Stern
