Legal Question in Construction Law in Minnesota

My contractor didn't cover my roof and it rained and did a lot of damage. It has been a week and his insurance company refuses to speak to me. I can't live there. What do I do? Do I need to get a lawyer?

Most likely, yes. But if you are financially able to do so you also should mitigate your damages by taking steps to cover the roof, dry the house out, and remove any mold. Before making any cleanup or repairs make sure to send the contractor a letter telling him you are going to take these steps and giving him a reasonable time to inspect the property before you start repairing it. Sending such a letter is important because it will prevent him from claiming you "spoliated" the evidence. Of course, you should keep track of all your costs and receipts. That said, good luck to you and let me know if I can be of further assistance.
