Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Minnesota

theft by swindle

Three and a half years ago, I was seeing someone and we were going to be getting married. He signed marriage license and everything. While preparing for the wedding I received several credit card offers and he told me to go ahead and accept them to pay for the wedding stuff, until he received a cash settlement that he was supposed to be receiving. Needless to say, he skipped out on me leaving me with all these bills which I was/am unable to pay. So, over the past few years, the interest has skyrocketed the amounts on these cards (most cards started with low balances of $250- 1000 max) and all have gone to collections and I am in MAJOR credit card debt and currently I am working at trying to pay these off the best that I can. Is there anything that I can do to get any money from him? Or is it too late? Still suffering financial damages due to theft by swindle.

If you had an agreement that he repay you for credit card charges, you have a contract claim against the other person. The statute of limitation on such claims is 2 years in most cases, from the date that the debt was to be repaid or from the date that any agreements were made for repayment.
