Legal Question in Family Law in Minnesota

I have an 8 year old son, his father has not been in his life for the past 7 years. I just started getting support because he joined the army. I have not spoken to him or seen him in this time. I am getting married and my son has known him as dad. What right does an absent parent have after 7 years?

A parent may always seek to assert their parental rights and have a court determine a parentring schedule. Until that occurs, they have no enforceable rights.

You may wish to consider seeking an agreement to terminate the father's parental rights and to have your husband adopt him. After the adoption, child support would terminate.
