Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Nebraska

Court Summons on Medical Bill

I received a summons on a medical bill that went unpaid just over a year ago. The bill was for treatment for my husband. The summons is in both of our names.

I contacted the woman whose name was on the summons, and she said that the full amount (2500.00) must be paid within so many days, and that payment plan was not an option.

What are the consequenses in court for not having the amount paid in full?

Is it standard procedure for a collections agency to not accept payments?

Re: Court Summons on Medical Bill

The creditor will get a judgment for the full amount owed, plus attorney's fees and the costs of bringing the suit. The consequence of not having the bill paid is the judgment against you. Many debt collection agencies refuse apparently reasonable repayment terms. After the judgment is entered, the creditor can take any non-exempt assets you have to satisfy the debt (e.g. wage or bank account garnishment.)
