If you have a legitimate reason for not wanting to respond to the subpoena, you should move to have the subpoena quashed. If you simply ignore it, you are subject to the penalties that the law provides to the issuing authority which vary. In the simplest case of a civil subpoena, you may be held in contempt of court and a warrant may issue for your arrest. If arrested, you will be brought to court and the judge will probably order that you be held in jail until compliance with the subpoena has been completed. If your failure to timely answer a subpoena causes another person to be damaged, they may have a civil remedy such as money damages.
