what do i do

10 yrs ago i lost my licence.i made other arrangements and decided not to get it back.i needed a photo i.d. i got it at new jersy motor vehicles.1 wk later they sent me aletter stating that i owed a surcharge that i didnt know about.

i called them they said they sent 3 notifications to an old address and they got them all back.i had no knowledge of the surcharge.it was $181.00 the letter said they put intrest onit now they want $3,882.11.i cant afford nor do i feel i should have to pay that amount for a surgharge i knew nothing about i keep trying to get in touch with them but everytime i call im on for hrs and never get to talk to anyone.please help i dont know what to do.

First, send a letter to DMV to get a copy of your driving abstract. I find it hard to believe that $181 is almost $4000 in only a few years. It is more likely that you have additional infractions that led to surcharges. Once you have your DMV abstract you need to review it line by line. Then you should write a letter to DMV by certified mail and request that they explain to you anything that you do not understand. You can hire an attorney to do this for you but in the end it is likely that surcharges will have to be paid.
