Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New Jersey

credit record

In 1995 I was sued by a creditor. My wages were garnished until the debt was payed. Now, 5 years later this debt is still showing up as "unpaid", and I am having trouble getting loans, credit cards and generally rebuilding my credit because of this. What can I do to get this off of my record. It has been paid off for 5 years now.

Re: credit record

Most people are under the mistaken impression that a credit report can be changed. It cannot. A credit report is like a history book. You can't change history and you can't change a credit report. However, just like a history book, your credit report looks differently as time moves on. If you have paid a bill, you need to contact each of the credit reporting agencies and tell them, showing them the proof that it is paid. This will then be added. Keep in mind that this advice is based purely on the little bit of information that you have given to me. There may be other factors that would change my opinion. Further, no one can rely on advice from an attorney who has not been retained. Since you have not retained an attorney in this case, before you take any further action, you should contact an attorney (either me or someone else) to discuss your matter in more detail. Only then will you be able to rely on the advice. I will be happy to assist you. However, you need to call me at 856-546-8010. If you mention LawGuru, there will be no charge for your first consultation. Good luck! Rob Gleaner
