Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New Jersey

I am in debt to a phone company. In the process of trying to contact me, they contacted my grandparents (whose information I did not provide to the phone company) My grandfather asked about it and they told him the situation, including how much I owe. I am 19 years old, legally independent of my grandparents. Is it illegal for a company to disclose your personal financial information to anyone, even a family member?
