I have seen a lot of these recently.

The statute of limitations in NJ is max 6 years. the debt is from another state, so i do not know what time limit will apply unless i have more information.

you can take steps to cut off the phone calls and letters. if they sue you, you can fight them (I am not absolutely sure about this old debt, but you have a good basis for fighting them).

Good luck. Do not just pay them. If you hired me, I would start by making them fill out a 'Debt Collector Disclosure Statement'.
