Legal Question in Criminal Law in New Jersey

Relationship Question

Hello, I had a quick question regarding a friend who was 22 years old dating a 17 year old girl in Florida and in New Jersey. They had a long distance relationship and were intimate during the respected ages. At the time the parents of the 17 year old knew about the significant other's age difference and knew they were intimate together, and they did not care. That was almost a year ago and now the 17 year old is 18 and legal. Their relationship was always good and the teen's family loved and know that the 22 (now 23 year old) is a great person and treats the other person well. My question is can the now 18 year old file charges of statutory rape or any type of charges from what happened when they were 17 even if that's not what happened at all? The two were in a loving relationship, cared about one another, and both families knew that full well, that's why they allowed it.

Re: Relationship Question

Don't know about Florida, but in New Jersey, 16 years is the age of consent. So unless the 22 now 23 year old Romeo was the Juliet's teacher, there was no crime.

Hope that didn't suck all of the excitement out of it for you.

Re: Relationship Question

If charges are filed, call an attorney ASAP before doing anything else. That's all there is to it.

Re: Relationship Question

The age of consent in New Jersey is 16 years old, so unless the 22 year old was the 17 year old's school teacher or in some other position of authority over her, no crime was committed in New Jersey. I don't know about Florida law, so I can't advise you on that aspect of your case. I am an attorney who has handled many cases similar to yours in various courts throughout New Jersey in the past. Please contact me to discuss your case in more detail. I never charge for simply talking to a person about their case. Thank you.

Sincerely yours, -Ronald Aronds, Esq.-
