Legal Question in DUI Law in New Jersey

Confused about the Law

I received a DUI in NC in May (BAC-.09%). Received a suspension letter from NJ for 210 day suspension. While speaking to NJDMV (to get the suspension lowered to 90 days),it was uncovered that NC sent it as a ''driving while impaired'', not ''driving under the influence''. NJ DMV said NJ would not recognize the driving while impaired offense and told me they wiped the record from my history. Does this seem correct? In addition, NJ DMV said that if it was in effect, the 90 day suspension would be over because it would have ran from the date in May when I was arrested.
