Legal Question in Family Law in New Jersey

Adoption of Niece

I have had my niece for 2 1/2 years (legal custody) and now both my sister and childs father has agreed to let us adopt her. We went to see a lawyer who told us it would be a $2000 retainer. We do not have the money to do that at this time (we just bought a house and my then my husband lost his job) Can I act pro se for an adoption and what is the procedure. Thanks!!

Re: Adoption of Niece

NO!!!!

Adoption is too tricky and there are too many regulations for someone to handle this pro se. So many things can go wrong!!!!

$2000 for a retainer is a real bargain. Beg and borrow if you have to but don't skimp on the lawyer. Better not to go forward with the adoption than to do it pro se. That is a horrible, terrible and foolish idea!!!!!

I agree with the other attorney. That is real cheap for an adoption. You have to find a credit card.
