Legal Question in Civil Litigation in New Jersey

Jane Doe's Submitting Answer to a Summons

The defendant in a summons is named plus it listed ''Jane Does 1-10''. We plan to take this suit to court and are unsure if each ''Jane Doe'' needs to submit an answer or just the named defendant.

Thank you.

You do not need to answer for a Jane or John Doe. They are fictitous names which are used by lawyers to preserve the Statte of limitation for those who may be discovered to be responsible during the discovery period of the law suit. You also do not answer a summons, only answer a complaint.

Those are for fictitious defendants and need not answer unless identified later (or from the facts). Counsel will so advise.
