Legal Question in Insurance Law in New Jersey

Home Improvement Contractor Insurance & Theft
During the course of a major home improvement, most of our jewerly and some other items DVDs etc were stolen from our home. The general contractor has a lock box and various parties with access to the home. Our police department is handling the matter and have a suspect. The general contractor claims not to be responsible for any insurance claims for the theft. I should not have to use my homeowners insurance for this theft. The general contractor should have guys that are bonded. What else can I do? The full amount of the items were $5500. What proof do I need to give the insurance company to issue a claim?
