Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New Jersey

If my lease does not stipulate anywhere that we can't have pets, and our landlord told us we could before we moved in. Now he's going back on his word, and he says it's in the lease but it's not. If i go get a dog, what can he do?

If the lease does not state that pets are prohibited, they normally are permitted. There could be special circumstances that might tend in the other direction, but that is the rule the courts will usually enforce. See also: http://info.corbettlaw.net/lawguru.htm
