Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New Jersey

I rented from my previous landlord for 3 years. Upon moving out at the end of January (due to us purchasing a home) we discussed verbally the 3 month back rent we owed the Landlord gave us a sheet of the break down of missed payments. We verbally explained that after we settle on our home we would contact them for payment plan. 1 month after moving out me and my husband received a Summons the we are being sued for non-payment. My husband has tried to contact their lawyer to try and set up payment plan called him 2 times not call back. I don't think this is something we should be going to court about and wasting the judges time bc I am not denying them their money we just need a payment plan bc we obviously don't have that money out of pocket, we didn't move out of state nor out of town we aren't running from them so, Question what are my options?
