Legal Question in Traffic Law in New Jersey

I got pulled over by a cop for the first time while driving in a park. He told me that I was going over the speed limit and when he came back to my window, he presented me with a careless driving ticket instead. When I asked him how much over I was going, he said that he didn't know. I told him that I thought that careless driving sounded worse than a speeding ticket but he said that that wasn't the case. According to him a careless driving is 2 points and speeding is 4. Again I asked if he could tell me how much over I was going and he said over 15mi/hr above speed limit- which wasn't true. Anyways, he told me that I could call the number on the ticket and schedule an appointment at the court so that I can plead not guilty and not have the points applied to my record. He also told me that he'd probably be there as well. I'm not sure what I should do. Careless driving sounds awful and I know that I wasn't speeding more than 15mi (if anything it was 5-10max). He couldn't provide me with proof of my speeding. I don't want points on my license, especially since I have a clean record.

You could hire an attorney to fight the case. The problem is that the legal fee will greatly exceed the fine you are facing. You could try the case yourself, but that is not usually a good idea for a nonlawyer. Call me if you like. 800/273/7933.
