If each spouse of a married couple dies on the same day, but at different times. Do I have to file two separate estate returns?

Yes, if appliacble [e.g. in NJ if the value of the estate exceeds $675,000] each spouse's estate must file an estate tax return...There is no "joint" filing for married couples when it comes to the estate tax.
