Is it legal for your employer to require you to open a Linkedin account to promote their business?

Perhaps not, but if your job is a good one why fight this meaningless battle. Sign on to Linkedin, then you never have to go there again unless your employer requires it. If it proves to be a burden, find another job. Linkedin is not a bad place, and is not particularly active unless you make it so. Properly used, it can be an effective networking tool providing more business. Nothing wrong with that unless it is a matter of principle with you. Usually the independently wealthy are the only ones who can economically stand on principle.
