Retirement benefits

When you retire from a company, (a nationwide corporation) do they have a legal right to say whom you can work for, for the first year after retirement; and cancel benefits if you do so?

Not unless you have an agreement in place that is enforceable, such as a Non-compete. Has anyone suggested that such agreement is in place?
