Cell phone drive for a foreign charity

I want to start a cell phone collection program, A portion of the proceeds willl go towards a foreign charity or organization in Central America. The other portion will go towards building my business. Would I get into any legal problems for this?

Charitable donations like this get into questions of nonprofit status with the feds and the state. Nonprofits are a world unto themselves and this landscape must be carefully trodden to avoid penalties.

You will need the help of an attorney and of a CPA for this venture. It is, though, very doable. Hire people with whom you feel comfortable working. The attorney should practice business law; ideally, the attorney will have gone through the nonprofit certification process with other clients.
