Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in New York

coach/teacher asking if student is gay

I was wondering if a coach/teacher has the right to ask a student if he/she is gay? I feel it is totally inappropriate, and that it should be violating something. I also need to state that even if the student has been misbehaving some and made a crude statement to the coach/teacher . This coach/teacher has also treated this student very poorly for the past year. Is this something that can be pursued? Other statements have also been made from the coach/teacher in the last year, in front of the whole team. Hoping for a good case. Thank You.

Re: coach/teacher asking if student is gay

Of course, a teacher/coach has no right to harass a student about his/her sexual orientation. Keep a diary with dates and names and quotes for your records. You may contact me via email if you wish to further discuss this.
