Legal Question in Construction Law in New York

Matress

I live in a 6 family building. Saturday I took an old matress outside on the sidewalk fot sanitation to pick it up. During the night the matress caught fire, propably somebody through a cigarette, and did some damage at the front of the building. Nobody got hurt. The fire department was called and put out the fire. Am I personally liable for the damage on the building?

Re: Matress

Quite possibly. You should consult an attorney about this case right away to find out if you need to inform your insurance company.

For example, if you put a Fridge or IceBox outside and left the door on it and a kid went into it and suffocated, you would be liable. The issue revoves around what rules there are for putting this item on the curb, what was forseeable and if you did the prudent thing.

You may contact my office if you wish to discuss this further.
