Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New York

I recently checked my credit report and saw that there was a civil judgement entered in December of 2012. I have contacted the debt collector and I opened a dispute with them since I have no idea what it is. They said they would pass it on to the dispute department and get back to me but also said there is no timeframe for an answer or resolution. I am wondering can they take as long as they want? Also what else can i do to get this resolved quickly?
