Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New York

Is there a statute of limiation on TUITION (not student loan) owed to a University in NY? In 1997, I was unwittingly enrolled in 2 evening courses at Columbia University and months later after courses had ended I received a bill for full tuition cost (although I never as much as stepped on campus during the duration of the courses). This was an absolute shock to me as I didn't know I had been enrolled so I called Columbia and was advised to drop the courses (although both courses had ended). I promptly did so the amount owed was by some percentage (40% or so). I didn't know how to fight this debt so I ignored it and the law firm representing Columbia (Tobback, Bernstein) obtained judgements against me and took money from 2 bank accounts. Is this debt still valid now or has it expired? I never signed a loan contract, this was just simply tuition owed for the courses.
