guilty

why would a lawyer tell his client not to talkl to anyone (girlfriend and mom) about a case unless he is guilty?

Because he has no privilege of confidentiality with them. I usually tell my clients not to speak to their Family or Girlfriends at all about the case guilty or not. Even when they are paying my fee. The right to remain silent is everyone's and everyone should use it when dealing with police or prosecutors.

Of Course having competent counsel in the first place and as soon as possible in the case will avoid many of the issues you rightfully believe may come about.
