Legal Question in Criminal Law in New York

How long will my felony conviction stay on my record

I would like to know how long my felony conviction will stay on my record, and it's been almost 7 years when will I be able to stop reporting to employers?

Unfortunately in New York, there is no such thing as an "expungement" of your record, and so, the felony is going to be on your record forever, unless enough People convince the State Legislature to change the law.

There is however a provision that may help you out somewhat. It does not erase your felony conviction, but it does remove any adverse job consequences for MOST [there are some exceptions] jobs in New York State.

You need to consult with an attorney - preferably in the County where you were originally convicted - and ask about getting a Certificate of Relief from Civil Disabilities. That comes from the Court and then provides you with some legal protection against employers who will not hire people because of an old felony on their record.

Good luck to you.
