Legal Question in Entertainment Law in New York

Starting a record label

I'm trying to start an independent record label and I would like to know how should I register the business? Should I register as a For profit or LLC?

Re: Starting a record label

First of all,you don't register a business as "for profit." Whether you want to be a for profit entity or not-for-profit entity in NY will dictate under which statute you file. If by "for profit" you mean a corporation, then whether you file as an LLC or corporation will depend upon a variety of factors that can only be determined by you after your own research and consultation with an attorney and tax advisor. Do some reading yourself and then feel free to call me.

You can have a for profit LLC. LLCs have been around for a few decades now and are much simpler that having to follow formalistic requirements for corporations, which must be followed at the risk of losing your limited liability. My firm is focues on Internet, media and entertainment law if you would like to discuss this further.
