If a parent dies -has no estate-no insurance for burial-are adult children liable for burial? We are estranged from him.

Legally --- no, adult children are not liable for the parent's burial.

I assume he doesn't have a will. As a result, the personal representative can close his bank account, collect his last check, and liquidate his small assets (used furniture, paid car) and pay for his burial through the proceeds (assuming there isn't insurance that would pay for it.)
