What is a young adult legally entitled to if he claims emancipation from his parents?

Firstly, there is no such thing as legal emancipation of a minor in New York State. It is simply not something that happens and there are no provisions for it under the law.

If you are under the age of 18 and residing outside the home, one has to assume that you are living with someone who is providing for you. That individual can go to court and seek child support from both your parents. Child support is based on a formula in the Child Support Standards Act and for one child there child support obligation would be 17% of their respective incomes.

If you are between the ages of 18 and 21 then you can apply for child support for yourself from both of your parents. The same formula applies. You may also ask that your parents contribute to your college expenses as well as other expenses such as medical.
